For parents

A short guide to what is in the app, how to read the magazine with a child, and what to talk about afterwards.

About the app

“Witnesses of Christmas” tells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ as Luke and Matthew wrote it. Children listen to the people who were there: Zechariah, Mary, Elizabeth, Joseph, the shepherds, Simeon, Anna, a wise man, and even King Herod. Beside them is the Word of God (an audiobook in the King James Version and the World English Bible) and the film “The Christmas Story.”

The games (“Ginger” and “Quiz”) are made for fun. Ginger is not in the Bible. The quiz questions, and the story about Jesus at the end, are real.

How to look together with the magazine

  1. Open the magazine page with the round medallion.
  2. Open the app, choose a witness, and choose “In the magazine.” Point the camera at the circle so the whole of it is visible.
  3. If the figure does not appear: turn on a light, don’t cover the circle with your hand, and hold the phone about a hand’s width away. Glare on glossy paper confuses the camera.
  4. You can simply watch on the screen: choose “On the phone.”

A Christmas evening: a 30-minute idea

  1. Read together the Gospel of Luke, 2:1–20 (or listen in “The Word of God”).
  2. Listen to two or three witnesses: Mary, the shepherd, and the wise man, for example.
  3. Talk: the questions below.
  4. Make a star out of paper and hang it over the child’s bed.
  5. Pray together (the prayer is at the bottom).

What to talk about after the story

Open the witness the child liked, and ask one or two questions. There is no need for “right” answers: let the child say it in their own words.

Zechariah
  • Zechariah had to wait a long time for an answer to his prayer. Is it hard for you to wait? What are you waiting for now?
  • Zechariah did not believe the angel at once. When is it hard for you to trust God?
  • The name Zechariah means “the Lord remembers.” Do you think God remembers you?
Mary
  • Mary was an ordinary girl, and God chose her. Why do you think God chooses ordinary people?
  • Mary said to the angel: “Let it be to me according to your word.” When is it hard to say “yes” to God?
  • Mary kept everything in her heart. What do you want to remember at Christmas?
Elizabeth
  • Elizabeth rejoiced at someone else’s happiness. How can you be glad for another person?
  • Elizabeth called Mary “the mother of my Lord.” Who is “the Lord”?
  • She was sad for many years, and then God gave her joy. Do you remember joy coming after sadness for you?
Joseph
  • Joseph obeyed God even though he didn’t understand everything. When can we trust, even if it isn’t all clear?
  • Joseph took care of Mary and the baby. Who can you take care of?
  • The name Jesus means “God saves.” What does He save us from?
Micah
  • Micah spoke about Bethlehem 700 years before Christmas. What does it mean that God keeps His word?
  • Bethlehem was a little town. What does “small, but important” mean to you?
  • What would you want God to promise you, and how can you know He will keep His word?
Shepherd
  • The shepherds went to Jesus at once. When do we hesitate to go to Him?
  • Ordinary people heard first, not kings. Why do you think that was?
  • They told everyone what they had seen. Who do you want to tell about Jesus?
Simeon
  • Simeon waited all his life, and the day came. What is worth waiting for with hope?
  • He said Jesus would be a light for all nations. What is a light that helps everyone?
  • How did Simeon recognize Jesus among so many people in the temple? (God revealed it to him.)
Anna
  • Anna prayed a lot. Why do we pray, and how do you pray?
  • She told everyone about Jesus. What do you want to tell other people?
  • Anna was 84, and she was joyful. What makes a person joyful?
Wise Man
  • The wise men traveled a very long way. What would you do to meet Jesus?
  • They brought gold, frankincense, and myrrh. What would you bring Jesus? (A hint: your heart.)
  • The wise men obeyed God and went home by another road. What does it mean to obey God?
Herod
  • Herod was afraid of losing his power. What are we sometimes afraid of?
  • The wise men worshiped Jesus. Herod wanted to harm Him. How differently can people meet Jesus?
  • God protected Jesus. What does that say about God?

A child’s Christmas prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you for coming to earth at Christmas. Thank you for loving me and for saving me. Help me to love you and other people. Amen.

A child can repeat it after you, or say it in their own words.
